About "BOOCS" Method of Therapy

Yes, I am not really into the BOOCS loop, except for (the very delicious) brown sugar lumps intake the clinic sold to me.

As mentioned in the previous day's post, "BOOCS" Method of Therapy is advocated by Dr. Takehiko Fujino.

The Second Visit: Introduction Posted on 14 Apr 2021

According to them, "BOOCS" is an abbreviation for "Brain Oriented Oneself Control System" or "Brain Oriented Obesity Control System" (Dr. Fujino invents both terminologies.) It is the so-called "solution to heal brain fatigue," particularly for people who suffer from eating disorders. I found a couple of interesting papers about the BOOCS method of diet control on Google Scholar.

Application of 'BOOCS' to the management of eating disordered patients with binge eating — Kyushu University

Among them, the report mentioned above issued by Kyushu University (where Dr. Fujino graduated; published on Jan 1, 1998, on the "Japanese Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine") quotes the method as the following:

"Fujino et al have developed a new therapeutic theory for obesity, the Brain Oriented Obesity Control System or 'BOOCS'. They have reported that the majority of obese persons using this method have succeeded in reducing body weight with few rebound cases. This theory considers obesity to be caused by 'brain fatigue', progressive brain dysfunction under the stress of every day life, and emphasizes that management should be focused more on how to reduce 'brain fatigue' rather than adherence to demanding diet/exercise regimens. To reduce 'brain fatigue', 'two principles and three rules' as follows are given as instructions to obese persons. 'Two principles': (1) Make as few prohibition as possible and deny your wants as little as possible. (2) Do something pleasant for yourself. 'Three rules': (1) Do not prohibit what you like, even if it is bad for your health. (2) Do not practice what you dislike, even if it is good for your health. (3) Do only what you like among things and matters good for your health."

Another paper (received on Apr 23, 2012, by the Physiological Society of Japan and Springer) describes the result of a six-month clinical study targeting three groups of a few dozen subjects each, who are either healthy controls, diabetic yet non-obese patients, or non-diabetic yet obese patients:

Improvement of diabetic or obese patients' erythrocyte deformability by the program of the brain-oriented obesity control system (BOOCS) - The Physiological Society of Japan and Springer [PDF]

I have understood so far from the lecture and video that continuous and excessive stresses cause many health problems, such as diabetes, obesity, and depression. However, for many of us, what we suffer comes from our surroundings; hence it is difficult to remove or change. BOOCS recognizes that and thus tries to heal the "brain fatigue" (according to Dr. Fujino) by treating your brain well (or pampering it.) How does it work?

I watched 30-min extended video guidance of BOOCS theory in which I learned that harmony largely governs the mental condition among the cerebral neocortex, paleocortex, and limbic cortex. Meanwhile, I took the reference of the following lecture on the development of the human brain.

脳と心の発達メカニズム [PDF]

BOOCS method tries to patch up the conflict between them and heal the wound of the rather delicate limbic cortex (aka the center of instinct and emotion) by actively having the patient do what it likes the most (called "快の原理 (rules to be comfortable).")

According to the website, the entire course of BOOCS (as mentioned in the figure above) takes 60 days and costs minimum of 46,000 yen.

By the way, what I have paid to them so far had been about 7,500 yen for the first visit (including all the tests, including blood, pulse, and urine) and 1,660 yen for the second visit (counseling), and I am slightly hoping that I won't need to enroll in the BOOCS program just yet.
