We didn’t plan this trip months ahead.
Before heading back to Pune, I decided on a whim to take my mother to Osaka, partly to celebrate her birthday a little early. Gemini-chan joined us now and then online, helping us pick places to eat and things to do.
Another bit of help came from credit-card loyalty points. Because of those, we could treat ourselves to a stay at The St. Regis Osaka, a place I’d usually think twice about booking at full price.
The St. Regis Osaka is on Midosuji in Honmachi, taking up the upper floors of the 27-story Hommachi Garden City complex. It opened on October 1, 2010, as Japan’s first St. Regis hotel. The building was finished just a few months earlier, in June 2010, replacing the old Honmachi Core and Yuraku Buildings. This was part of Osaka’s urban renewal program, which allowed for a tower over 130 meters tall on Midosuji.
Strangely, though, the hotel doesn’t feel especially new.
Before I learned about its history, I thought the building was much older. The solid stone exterior, high ceilings, and understated elegance make it feel like a classic grand hotel, not a modern tower from 2010. That’s on purpose—the lower part of Hommachi Garden City was designed with a stone exterior to match the traditional look of Midosuji.
Inside, too, the atmosphere is more classical than fashionable. It is luxurious without trying very hard to tell you that it is luxurious.
The staff were friendly the whole time, and the location was especially helpful during the hot Osaka summer.
The hotel connects right to Exit 7 of Osaka Metro’s Hommachi Station, so you can get to the subway without spending much time outdoors.
That really made a difference.
Osaka was so hot that being outside stopped being fun and started to feel unsafe. Instead of forcing ourselves to sightsee just because that’s what tourists do, we mostly gave in to the heat.
We stayed inside instead.
Luckily, Osaka is a great city for spending time indoors.
From Honmachi, we could slip into underground shopping streets, covered arcades, and department stores, heading back to the hotel now and then to rest. The long Semba and Shinsaibashi arcades let us wander south in true Osaka style, without having to face the blazing sun or sudden downpours that can pop up in summer.
Instead of trying to see everything, we made the hotel part of our experience.
We also enjoyed afternoon tea there, using a discounted online reservation. Staying at a luxury hotel mostly with points, booking tea at a web discount, and exploring Osaka indoors might not be the usual summer holiday, but it made sense for us.
With my mother, there was no need to hurry anywhere.
One of the nicest moments happened right at the end.
While checking out, I chatted with the women at reception and mentioned I lived in India. To my surprise, one of them smiled and told me her boyfriend was from Kerala.
Out of all the things we could have talked about at a luxury hotel in Osaka, Kerala suddenly became part of the conversation.
It was a small coincidence, but exactly the kind I remember from a trip.
So this Osaka trip wasn’t about ticking off landmarks. It was an early birthday getaway with my mother, made possible by loyalty points, with a little help from Gemini-chan, and shaped by the intense summer heat.
We stuck to the shade, went underground when possible, ate well, rested well, and let ourselves enjoy not trying to see it all.
Sometimes the best part of a trip is just having a comfortable place to relax and someone special to share it with.
